Ephemeral Mists' Musical Instruments - Kaval
The Kaval is very closely related to other end blown flutes like the ney and anasazi flutes. Like many of the middle eastern wind instruments there are slight variations in tuning and mechanical architecture dependent upon the actual country/region that your instrument is from. I own two Kavals. One is from Bulgaria and one is from Macedonia. They both have a lovely, deep rich tone and are close to 30 inches long, making them quite long in terms of wooden flute designs. They have a fully chromatic range of 2 1/2 octaves, making them powerful melodic instruments.
